The Society of the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers), founded in 1868 by Archbishop Mgr. Charles Lavigerie of Algiers, is an international and intercultural missionary society with a family spirit.

Mission/ Identity

Since its inception, the Society has aimed to evangelize Africans in Africa and the African world, including missions to the diaspora. The White Fathers have been active in several areas since their foundation, including:

  • Establishing and developing new Christian communities
  • Formation of laity and clergy
  • Engaging in social work
  • Championing the fight for justice and peace, continuing our founder’s anti-slavery campaign
  • Promoting rural development
  • Fostering dialogue with believers of other religions, particularly Islam

While Africa remains our primary focus, the Society has also established houses in Europe, North and Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia. The principle of three in the community underscores our commitment to international and intercultural community life. The official languages of the Society are English and French.
